Physical Patterns in a Changing World

In the Physical Patterns in a Changing World unit, students will learn about features of the environment, such as landforms, bodies of water, and climate regions, and they will discover how Earth’s features interact with one another. They will investigate natural processes and patterns with the aid of maps and charts. This knowledge will help them evaluate many of the different perspectives on the challenges and opportunities Earth’s environment presents to people. The materials in the course will communicate in appropriate vocabulary and manageable formats.

Natural Resources Around the World: Use and Sustainability

In the Natural Resources Around the World: Use and Sustainability unit, students will learn about people’s relationships with renewable, non-renewable, and flow resources. They will build an understanding of the geographic inquiry process to support their investigation of the world’s natural resources. These skills will include reading and creating maps and graphs. They will also describe different perspectives on the use and conservation of the environment, assessing the views of different groups by gathering and interpreting data from many sources, before building their own conclusions based on their research. Finally, students will make their own plan of action to contribute to a more sustainable world.

This course is entirely online and does not require nor rely on any textbook. Students will require the following resources:

  • A scanner, smartphone camera, or similar device to digitize handwritten or hand-drawn work
  • A device to record audio
  • A printer
  • A physical binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities

Through a balance of problem-solving and direct instruction, students develop a strong foundation of geography processes, knowledge, and skills to apply in real-world contexts. The course utilizes a combination of technology and offline activities, providing opportunities to develop an understanding of skills and concepts in interactive and concrete ways and engage multiple learning styles. The lessons feature a variety of intriguing storylines, characters, videos, storybooks, and interactive games to reinforce students’ learning. These activities also build a foundation of geography-related terms that students will use throughout the elementary grades.

The course relies on the assistance of a teacher to support young students through the content. The teacher will be involved in facilitating the course content, and participating in discussion-based activities to assist students in developing communication skills.
