Grade 8 French

In Grade 8 French, our students will refine their comprehension skills and ability to understand oral texts. Students will create a presentation about a French-speaking country and use advanced speaking strategies to present. Students will build on their vocabulary using technology and dictionaries. They will then explore the world of sport as they learn common vocabulary and write their own magazine article. This course is designed to be 120 instructional hours.

Nous sommes tous uniques

In the Nous sommes tous uniques unit, students will identify and use comprehension strategies before, during, and after a lesson. They will use these skills to explore hobbies, interests, and write social media posts. They will work on developing comprehension skills for understanding oral texts, and use expressions to describe locations they have visited.

L’Europe

In the L’Europe unit, students will explore French-speaking countries in Europe. They will learn about monuments and cultural characteristics of these French-speaking countries. They will develop skills to create a presentation on one of the countries studied. They will make connections between their presentation, personal experiences, and community. They will compare menus from different Francophone countries in Europe. Furthermore, students will identify the audience, and purpose of a text, and use speaking strategies to speak well in French.

Les médias et la technologie

In the Les médias et la technologie unit, students will learn about media and technology while improving their language skills. They will identify and use interactive listening and speaking strategies to have conversations with others. They will expand their French vocabulary by using a dictionary, and by creating a word wall. They will be introduced to common French abbreviations that are used when texting in French. They will practice reading texts about technology to improve their reading skills. Furthermore, students will learn about parts of speech.

Les sports

In the Les sports unit, students will explore sports vocabulary and expressions. They will talk about your favourite sport. They will identify the characteristics of different types of texts, and determine the purpose of different types of texts. They will use vocabulary acquisition strategies before, during, and after reading. Students will use different strategies and resources to write their own magazine article and make revisions to it.

This course is entirely online and does not require nor rely on any textbook. Students will require the following resources:

  • A scanner, smartphone camera, or similar device to digitize handwritten or hand-drawn work
  • A device to record audio
  • A printer
  • A physical binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • A dictionary
  • Various household items to complete offline activities
  • Paper, pencil

Through a balance of problem-solving and direct instruction, students develop a strong foundation of French processes, knowledge, and skills to apply in real-world contexts. The course utilizes a combination of technology and offline activities, providing opportunities to develop an understanding of skills and concepts in interactive and concrete ways and engage multiple learning styles. The lessons feature a variety of intriguing storylines, characters, videos, storybooks, and interactive games to reinforce students’ learning. These activities also build a foundation of reading, writing, speaking, and listening that students will use throughout the elementary grades.

The course relies on the assistance of a learning coach who supports young students as they move through the content. The learning coach will be involved in facilitating technical aspects of the course and in participating in discussion-based activities to assist students in developing communication skills.
